SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT OF CORFU
The Society for the Protection of the Environment of Corfu was founded ίn
1981 by a team of citizens and today numbers about 300 individuals.
All these years the Society fights for right briefing but above all tries to
sensitise the world οn environmental issues .
Many times this was difficult because private and political interests were
involved.
Some of the actions of the Society of the Protection of the Environment:
- Was the first to issue a newspaper within the Greek ecological area
- The Society issues pamphlets and brochures of ecological interest and raises matters, demanding solutions
- Takes the necessary steps, to make the authorities carry out inspections for pollution both in land and in the sea.
- Makes use of the public communication media, to inform the public on relevant matters
- Exercises pressure for the recycling and treatment of the civil waste, in order to get energy out of it. -
- Has opened two stores, selling ecological food products and encouraging biological cultivation
- Organizes lectures, meetings and other events, with the assistance of competent scientists, on matters relevant to the protection of the environment and architectural and cultural inheritance.
- Has decisively and effectively projected the conservation of the Fortresses and the other medieval monuments.
- One of the major achievements of the Society was the abolishment of the sprinkling from the air (with airplanes or helicopters) of the olive trees with insecticides chemical products.
